A Message from a Current SLA Employee (& Founder) to the Next SLA Employee…
You might come to SLA as clinician, manager, administrative staff, intern, or a number of other valued positions. Each of us has had respected mentors that have guided us along the way. These mentors might be family members, spouses, teachers, or supervisors, anyone whose opinions and respect we value and whose feedback is consistent, objective, and expected. We know these individuals will expect our best, can recognize errors and inconsistencies, and will hold us accountable for anything less than the science and our training has provided.
Now….replace this person with a student, a student’s family member, or any young adult looking to make a positive impact on their own life and their community with your help.
How would you treat this individual if this person knew the best scientific practices as you do and expected this level of intervention as your mentors would?
How would you treat this person if they knew to expect frequent data analysis and communication and the highest ethical standards as your mentors would?
How would you treat them if you knew they understood the level of progress their agreed-upon services should result in?
You would hold yourself accountable for keeping current with what is best scientific practice, adhere to strict data-collection protocols, and communicate all progress and options with parents, because you know that you will be expected to meet those standards and will be held accountable for anything else.
